Rainer Thuerbach

Rainer Thuerbach joined Advent in 2011 and is a Managing Director in Frankfurt. He acts as an advisor in the German-speaking region and advises on investments in the consumer and industrial sectors. Rainer has advised on 12 investments during his career at Advent.

Prior to joining Advent, Rainer worked in the US Mergers & Acquisitions Group at UBS in New York.

Rainer holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the European Business School (EBS), Germany, and studied abroad at Peking University in Beijing, China.

How do you identify interesting companies in your sector and sub-sector of focus?

At Advent, my focus on the industrial sector involves a strategic approach to identifying promising companies. This strategy is particularly true for the energy transition sub-sector, where I can leverage my experience and network to stay ahead of emerging trends and technological advancements. We strive to identify companies with robust growth potential and competitive advantages by maintaining strong relationships with industry leaders and innovators.

How do you challenge yourself and others to improve continuously?

Continuous improvement is a core principle that I embrace both personally and professionally. At Advent, I challenge myself and my colleagues to push boundaries and deeply explore the merits of any given investment opportunity. This ethos encourages moving from good to great and is essential in a competitive industry like ours. Beyond our embedded culture of learning, I was able to work out of our New York office for three years, which allowed me to form lasting, valuable relationships with various colleagues. During this time, I witnessed the differences in deal-making and management team operations across the pond. I apply and share this knowledge with the companies and colleagues I work with today.

Describe a pivotal experience that has shaped your career.

A pivotal experience in my career was navigating a complex cross-border carve-out transaction. Preparing the company for standalone operations required our team to work together and identify a path forward while operating under a complex set of constraints. The successful completion of this transaction underscored the importance of adaptability in overcoming challenges with many twists and turns.

What keeps you busy outside of work, and what do you do for fun?

Outside of work, I am passionate about skiing and keeping up with my children’s pursuit of the sport. Being outdoors allows us to recharge together while also exploring new destinations.
