Douglas Hallstrom

Douglas Hallstrom joined Advent in 2014 and subsequently re-joined the firm in 2018. He is a Managing Director in London and advises on investments in the technology sector. Douglas has advised on 10 investments during his career at Advent.

Prior to rejoining Advent, Douglas supported the executive team at Advent’s portfolio company Unit4 and subsequently ran a start-up. Earlier in his career, he worked at Bain & Company in London and Toronto.

Douglas received a BSc, with First Class Honors, from the University of St. Andrews.

How do you identify interesting companies in your sector/sub-sector of focus?

We often say “deals create deals” as many of our best investment ideas build on the insight we develop through our existing portfolio. Working from the front line, alongside highly skilled management teams, we’re able to better understand market dynamics and identify deal opportunities in real time.

Our deep sub-sector expertise enables us to develop pattern recognition that sharpens our conviction. That experience helps us source new opportunities with the same insight and conviction as strategic acquirers.

How has working with operating partners and operating advisors helped to improve your work at Advent?

Every investment I work on at Advent is underwritten alongside operators. Sometimes it’s an existing or buy-in Chief Executive Officer, sometimes an Operating Partner, and at times it is both.

We invest in transformative projects, so it is critical to have alignment from the people who will deliver the change from the outset of the investment.

What about your job inspires and drives you?

The greatest thing is seeing people and businesses reach their full potential. I’ve seen companies move from strategic uncertainty and meaningful operational underperformance to real clarity and outstanding operational execution within a few quarters.

Seeing people who embrace change thrive, and be rewarded in transformation journeys, is incredibly fun and inspiring.
