In conversation with industrial software leader Prometheus Group: From 20 years of nuance to an AI-enabled future

Prometheus Group (Prometheus) is a leading provider of industrial software helping heavy-asset operators manage maintenance, reliability, and asset performance. In this conversation, Advent Managing Partner Eric Wei speaks with Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Eric Huang about what makes the business structurally hard to replicate – from deeply embedded domain knowledge to workflows shaped by decades on the plant floor.

Advent partnered with Prometheus in 2024, combining its technology investment expertise with Prometheus’s operational roots in industrial environments. They discuss why the complexity embedded in Prometheus’s software is a structural moat and what it means to stay genuinely close to customers after two decades of growth.

Twenty years of nuance

Eric Wei: What initially attracted us to Prometheus was the differentiated position it occupies. The company had been building mission-critical software for heavy-asset industries for over 20 years. It has accumulated a body of domain knowledge that simply does not exist elsewhere. Tell us a bit more about what Prometheus does and who it serves.

Eric Huang: Prometheus Group is a 900-person company focused on heavy-asset industrial software. We help our customers manage maintenance—tracking what needs to be repaired, how it should be repaired, and how frequently. The industries we serve are unforgiving: oil refineries, power utilities, and mining operations. When equipment fails unexpectedly, the consequences can be severe. Our software is the system of record for avoiding that.

Eric Wei: There is a great deal of discussion about AI startups and large language models just replicating established software. What would a new entrant need to overcome to compete with what Prometheus has built?

Eric Huang: I think the biggest thing, by far, is that there is a lot of nuance in our space. There is tacit knowledge that you really can’t replicate by AI alone. Our first attempt at using AI, in fact, was to rebuild our own software from scratch. We quickly discovered that there was 20 years of nuance that just can’t be captured. That’s how we shifted to letting AI use our existing software, which already has all the nuanced ways to handle things built in. I like to say our competitors design software for air-conditioned offices; ours is built to be used in a plant.

“The biggest thing, by far, is that there is a lot of nuance in our space. There is a tacit knowledge that you really can’t replicate by AI alone.”

Built for the plant floor, not the boardroom

Eric Wei: When we did our customer work, the bottom-up perspective from the factory level—the customer view—was the big differentiator. Unlike a lot of software that is designed from the top down, you’ve stayed close to the customer, which is impressive.

Eric Huang: I think that is our secret sauce, and it is something we will never give up at Prometheus Group. It is not just a value statement—it shapes every product decision we make. One of the ways Advent is different from other private equity houses is that you’ve encouraged us to stay very close to our customers and not lose that secret sauce.

Advent as a growth partner

The partnership between Advent and Prometheus reflects a broader thesis in Advent’s industrial software strategy: durable software businesses in specialised verticals derive their value from depth of domain knowledge, not breadth of features. In Prometheus’s case, that depth is the product of two decades of iteration alongside some of the most demanding industrial operators in the world.

For Advent, the investment thesis centres on helping Prometheus expand its reach into new geographies and adjacent asset-intensive industries, while protecting the customer intimacy and technical specificity that have made the platform trusted by plant-floor users across the globe.

“One of the ways Advent is different from other private equity houses is that you’ve encouraged us to stay very close to our customers and not lose that secret sauce.”
