In conversation with food ingredient pioneer IRCA: From domestic champion to a global player

IRCA is a specialty food ingredients company that has been a trusted partner to chefs, bakers and food manufacturers for over a century. Here, Advent Managing Director, Francesco Casiraghi, talks with IRCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Massimo Garavaglia, about their plans for expansion and transformation.

Francesco: What initially attracted us to IRCA was its technical knowhow and the quality of its products. The company had solid operations in Italy, but had yet to conquer the world. The opportunity to expand across Europe and critically, the US, excited us. Tell us a bit more about this.

Massimo: IRCA’s growth is built on over a century of innovation. From its roots as a leading Italian player in specialty food ingredients, the company has evolved to have a strong presence in major markets, including North America.

Our partnership with Advent has been game-changing. It’s driven a significant increase in IRCA’s scale and ambition, allowing us to expand our global reach and broaden our product portfolio. This strategic collaboration positions us to continually offer an extensive array of top-quality specialty ingredients tailored for the food industry.

Francesco: What are some of the defining factors that have set IRCA apart in a competitive landscape impacted by supply chain disruptions, digitization, and regulatory shifts?

Massimo: IRCA has built a diverse portfolio through organic growth and strategic acquisitions. We offer a full range of specialty ingredients for the indulgence and nutritional snacks market, including chocolates, creams & fillings, toppings & inclusions, pastry mixes, nut-based products, and gelato ingredients. What sets us apart is our in-depth knowledge and expertise in each of these areas. This allows us to effectively serve a diverse range of customers, from individual chefs to large fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. Our commitment to quality and innovation has driven us to grow and adapt. The food industry is constantly evolving, and IRCA is at the forefront. We’re always pushing the boundaries of innovation, exploring new flavor profiles, developing innovative ingredients, and refining our production methods for bakery, pastry, and ice cream.

Francesco: You have three decades of experience in the food ingredients industry and held numerous leadership positions, including at Barry Callebaut, a leader in chocolate and chocolate ingredients, and De’ Longhi, a provider of small domestic appliances and coffee machines. What attracted you to join IRCA?

Massimo: What drew me in was the chance to drive transformation. It wasn’t about maintaining the status quo; it was about building on a solid foundation and transforming IRCA into a global leader through innovation and targeted investments and acquisitions. IRCA has a proven history of offering a unique, one-stop solution in a growing, fragmented market, which is ripe with potential. We have a bold plan ahead, and with the strong leadership of the IRCA team, I’m confident we can make it happen.

Francesco: IRCA has demonstrated an ability to capitalize on emerging trends, such as the recent popularity of Dubai chocolate. How do these trends showcase IRCA’s agility?

Massimo: The Dubai chocolate trend is a perfect example of IRCA’s adaptability and robust portfolio. A viral social media buzz drove high interest in this pistachio-based product, and with our expertise and resources, we were quick to formulate a complete solution that allowed chefs to capture the trend with ease. Innovation remains pivotal for our growth in the food ingredients sector. For instance, the pistachio company we acquired has witnessed a threefold increase in size and now supplies several producers, fueling the Dubai chocolate craze. We also have our sights set on further international growth – markets such as South America, India, and China hold significant potential for us.

Francesco: Reflecting on the transformation of IRCA, what specific achievements or milestones stand out to you as pivotal moments of progress, and how have these shaped the company’s trajectory?

Massimo: I am incredibly proud of the team’s dedication and how we have adjusted to change. We have a collaborative and talented team throughout the entire organization, which is essential for achieving our ambitious growth objectives.  

Francesco: As IRCA continues to evolve and innovate, what is your long-term vision for the company’s future? How do you see IRCA shaping its role as a major player in the specialty food ingredients sector?

Massimo: My vision for IRCA is to solidify our position as a global player in specialty food ingredients. We will continue to expand our geographical reach, strengthen our product portfolio, and foster a culture of innovation and excellence. I believe that with the continued support of Advent and the dedication of our team, IRCA is poised for even greater success in the years to come.
