The 5th Annual Private Equity Awards in Spain, organized by ASCRI, honour Jaime Carvajal Urquijo – Special Partner, Advent International – in recognition of his career and contribution to the industry from its beginnings in Spain.
Madrid, July 5, 2012 – Jaime Carvajal Urquijo has been presented with the Honorary Award at the 5th Annual Private Equity Awards in Spain ceremony organized by ASCRI , Deloitte and the IESE Business School. Jaime Carvajal Urquijo has been a Special Partner at Advent International and Chairman of its Spanish offices since 2002, the year the international private equity firm opened its offices in Madrid.
Jaime Carvajal Urquijo received the accolade last night at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid at an event that brought together key players from the Spanish venture capital industry.
“It gives me great satisfaction to receive this award. I have experienced first-hand the beginnings and evolution of venture capital in Spain. The joint effort of many colleagues laid the foundations of an industry which has contributed greatly to the Spanish economy and to Spanish companies and will undoubtedly continue to do so,” explained Jaime Carvajal Urquijo.
Carvajal Urquijo’s relationship with Advent International dates back to Iberfomento, the Spanish investment firm he founded in 1988 with which Advent International carried out its first transactions in Spain in 1996.
Advent International led one of the highest profile private equity investments in Spain, namely the acquisition of the theme park operator Parques Reunidos; which it delisted in the first public to private transaction in the Spanish market. The firm has also invested in Human Group (formerly Alta Gestión), Alcalá Farma and Jazztel, among others. In 2010 it acquired the leading property valuation business Tinsa and in 2012 it purchased a major stake in MAXAM, a Spanish multinational that operates in more than 40 countries in the areas of civil explosives, defence, hunting cartridges and chemical products.
Carvajal Urquijo has been involved in over 30 investment projects; he holds a Law Degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and an MA in Economics from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
He started his career at Banco Urquijo, rising to the position of Chairman. He has served as Chairman of Ford España between 1981 and 2003, Chairman of Banco Hispano Industrial and Board Member of Banco Hispano Americano between 1983 and 1988, Chairman of Iberfomento between 1988 and 1997, Chairman of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson (Spain) and Dresdner Kleinwort Capital (Spain) between 1988 and 2002 and Chairman of Ericsson Spain between 1995 and 2011, among other positions.
During his career the executive has also held directorships for a wide range of companies including Telefónica, Repsol, Unión Fenosa, Abengoa, Indra, Keinwort Benson Group, SGS Holding, Parque Reunidos and Lafarge-Asland.
Currently, Carvajal Urquijo also acts as Senior Advisor for Morgan Stanley and Chairman of Asea Brown Boveri, S.A., and sits on the boards of Ferrovial, MAXAM, Aviva España and Solvay Ibérica.
