Herlitz is Germany’s leading supplier of stationery and papeterie.
Although predominantly focused on the retail food industry, Herlitz’ client base incorporates a variety of retail outlets including supermarkets, speciality retailers, wholesalers, cash & carries, discounters and department stores.
Headquartered in Berlin, Herlitz’ operations span manufacturing, warehousing, logistics and point-of-sale merchandising enabling it to provide valuable “turn-key” solutions to many of its customers. The first firm to move into the provision of stationery products to the food retail industry, Herlitz enjoys strong brand recognition and attracts a high level of loyalty amongst a blue-chip client base.
Despite its early success, a period of high growth until the mid-1990s led to an ill-considered expansion programme which saw the company pass into receivership. Although a debt-led financial restructuring was successful in stabilising the business, majority control passed to its financial backers in 2001. Notwithstanding these challenges, Herlitz has maintained its market leadership, generating revenues of €335m in 2004.
Our acquisition marks a period of proactive investment in the business which will see a focus on consolidating its leadership in a fragmented domestic market. Non-domestic expansion opportunities will also be explored, in particular higher growth markets such as Eastern Europe where Herlitz already has an established manufacturing presence.
